Meet LadyBug, Minnesota's Spokesbunny
Why did we pick LadyBug to be our spokesbunny? LadyBug's is the quintessential story of the rabbit for whom buying a little time makes the difference between life and death. Her story also illustrates the importance of spaying and neutering rabbits.
LadyBug was a feisty cinnamon-colored "propeller-eared" rabbit at one of our metro area shelters who was considered unadoptable because of her cage-aggressive behavior. She lunged and growled when people put their hands in her cage, scaring away both staff and potential adopters.
Understanding that her behavior was at least in part because she was not spayed, MCRS fosterers took in LadyBug and made a prompt appointment for spay surgery. The surgery revealed a uterine mass, which was removed. LadyBug was experiencing hormonal surges and probably pain. (By two years of age, up to 50% of unspayed female rabbits have uterine cancer; LadyBug was just 13 months old when spayed.)
As is frequently the case, a few weeks after her spay surgery, LadyBug became calmer and neater in her litterbox habits. She is still spirited, but never aggressive, and is a delight to live with.
LadyBug's history alone makes her a perfect MCRS representative. In addition, her personality is very outgoing and social, making her a great "spokesbunny".
